Text: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)
Theme: Christmas
duration: 3 mins

Christmas Bells is part of Christmas Thoughts, a five movement cantata, but also available here as a separate item.
The complete work Christmas Thoughts brings together five contrasting poems each of which reference elements of the Christmas story. While none of these texts explicitly tell that story they do offer contemplations on the spiritual meaning of Christmas and, as such, illustrates its universal appeal and significance.
Christmas Bells describes how the sound of Christmas Bells lifted the author's spirits despite personal tragedy and the horror’s of the on-going American civil war. The music is dramatic but ends in blaze of optimism.
This piece is also available as part of the complete work Christmas Thoughts
It was first performed by Llandaff Cathedral Society as part of their 'lockdown' Christmas project: Winter Legends, Christmas Bells which premiered on YouTube December 2020.
