‘I Sing of a Maiden’ is Iain James Veitch’s setting, for unaccompanied mixed choir, of the Middle English lyric poem/carol I syng of a Mayden (also known as ‘As Dewe in Aprille). Composing Christmas music begs the question, what makes makes music sound like Christmas music? Does music for Christmas even have to sound like ‘Christmas music’? Whatever arguments there might be on this question, this contemporary setting hits the spot with its emotionally direct folk-style tunes and harmony.
