O Christmas Day
(SATB & Organ)
Music: Iain James Veitch
Text: William Robert McIntyre (1851-1914)
Theme: Christmas
duration: 5 mins
O Christmas Day is part of Christmas Thoughts, a five movement cantata, but also available here as a separate item.
Christmas Thoughts brings together five contrasting poems each of which reference elements of the Christmas story. While none of these texts explicitly tell that story they do offer contemplations on the spiritual meaning of Christmas and, as such, illustrates its universal appeal and significance.
O Christmas Day is an invigorating, festive number setting a joyous and heart-felt poem by the Scottish born poet and bishop Robert McIntyre. In this poem all ‘hate and envy’ are ‘buried deep beneath the snow' - at least for Christmas Day! Here we have a feel-good text that is the embodiment of seasonal good-will.
It was first performed by Llandaff Cathedral Society as part of their 'lockdown' Christmas project: Winter Legends, Christmas Bells which premiered on YouTube December 2020.
This piece is also available as part of the complete work Christmas Thoughts
