The work was written in 2018 in response to a request from some flute-playing friends based in York.
As the title suggests, the number three pervades this piece in lots of ways, not least in the emergence of augmented 5th chords (which divide the twelve-note scale into three equal portions) at cardinal moments. More importantly, however, the three movements are all dances, which means that unless otherwise indicated, tempi should be rock-steady and, in the outer movements, with well-defined rhythms. The middle movement should have the elegance and tranquility of a spider's web. Finally, it will help the performance if the players have some experience in non-classical music traditions - rhythm works differently there.
